Why “Touch Your Heart” Touched My Heart

It has been almost two months since I finished watching the Korean drama “Touch Your Heart”, and I am unable to take it out of my conscience. It’s not the kind of drama that would typically leave a lasting impression, or would change your life, or something. It’s not adorned with intricate plot twists or intense, heart-tugging moments. Instead, it captivates you with its sincerity and simplicity, weaving a tale that, while familiar, even cliched, feels refreshingly genuine. As I sit down to reflect on my experience with the show one thing becomes glaringly evident –  has ensnared my thoughts and refuses to let go.

I laugh thinking how I was thinking that I would most probably skip this show because I hardly saw anyone talk about it (this was my BLDWO – Before Lee Dong Wook Obsession). Then I came across one blessed reel where someone had commented, Touch Your Heart finally gave a happy ending to Wang Yeo and Kim Sun. We should give more credits to reels. After this, I knew I had to watch this show. This reunion of Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In-na not only showcases the undeniable chemistry between the two actors but also provides a sense of catharsis for fans who yearned for a more uplifting resolution to their on-screen romance in Goblin/ Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. I vividly remember when I started watching the show. I was sitting at the airport, waiting to board the plane. It was a cold sunny morning with a hint of warmth. Halfway through the flight and finished the first episode. I was left with a huge smile when the first episode got over.

“Touch Your Heart” follows a classic storyline, almost banal in its core – two individuals from contrasting backgrounds thrust together by the series of circumstances. From initial animosity to a gradual progression towards friendship, care, confidantes, and finally lovers, the journey of these characters, Kwon Jung-rok and Oh Jin-shim, is one we’ve seen before, many times. Yet, it’s the authenticity with which their story unfolds that sets it apart.

What struck me the most about this drama was the absence of toxic traits in the lead couple’s relationship. In a prospect often littered with unhealthy dynamics portrayed as romantic, “Touch Your Heart” stands as a beacon of what a healthy relationship should resemble – built on trust, respect, and genuine care for one another.

One particular aspect that resonated deeply with me was Jung-rok’s evolution. His journey from harboring biases towards Jin-shim to actively unlearning them was portrayed with such sincerity that it felt like a revelation. Witnessing him delve into Jin-shim’s world, watching her interviews, and immersing himself in her work, not out of obligation but out of genuine interest and support, was incredibly heartwarming.

The scene where he openly acknowledges his love for her in front of his father encapsulates the essence of the drama for me. It serves as a powerful reminder that one shouldn’t settle for the bare minimum in relationships. Jung Rok’s willingness to stand up for his love, unabashedly and without reservation, is a testament to the depth of their connection and the growth he undergoes throughout the series.

The other scene where he showed that he is not just a green flag but a whole green forest was one he was visibly getting affected by the negative comments written for Jin-shim. Later when he printed a list of the positive comments, and even highlighted some to show it to her was a cherry on the cake. Nothing extravagant, nothing cheesy. But showing the world what a standard partner should be.

“Touch Your Heart” evinces the theme of second chances and resilience flawlessly through the character of Jin-shim. From the very beginning, she encounters numerous obstacles and setbacks that threaten to derail her career and personal life. Yet, it is her unwavering determination and resilience that truly define her journey. Despite facing adversity, Jin Shim refuses to be defined by her past mistakes or failures. Instead, she embraces each challenge as an opportunity to grow and evolve, showcasing the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.

Throughout the series, Oh Jin Shim’s relentless pursuit of her dreams serves as an inspiring example of resilience in action. Her unwavering commitment to overcoming obstacles and striving for success resonates deeply, reminding viewers that setbacks are not the end of the road but merely stepping stones on the path to achievement. Through her character arc, “Touch Your Heart” delivers a poignant message about the transformative manifestations of second chances and the indomitable strength that lies within each individual to rise above adversity and seize the opportunities that come their way. One thing I liked about Oh Jin Shim’s character is how they executed the depth of the character. Looking like a naive, gullible person at the surface but as the show progresses we witness how she has multifolds of layers of complexities, strength, and resilience.

Both the lead actors of “Touch Your Heart” have undoubtedly delivered an exceptional performance, breathing life into the characters and elevating the drama to new heights. Yoo In-na’s portrayal of the charming and determined Oh Jin Shim is nothing short of captivating. With her infectious energy and effortless charisma, she effortlessly embodies the resilience and optimism of her character, drawing viewers into Jin Shim’s world and making her journey feel all the more relatable and inspiring.

Opposite Yoo In-na, Lee Dong-wook’s portrayal of the stoic yet endearing Kwon Jung Rok adds depth and nuance to the drama. His portrayal of Jung Rok’s gradual transformation from a rigid and judgmental lawyer to a compassionate and understanding partner is a testament to his versatility as an actor. Lee Dong-wook brings a subtle intensity to the role, capturing the complexities of Jung Rok’s character with finesse and authenticity. LDW has donned the skin of many characters, and I have loved him in everything but Kwon Jung-rok will always have a special place in my heart.

“Touch Your Heart” may not boast the grandeur of other dramas, but its ability to touch the heart lies in its simplicity. It reminds us that love doesn’t always need to be adorned with grand gestures or extravagant declarations. Sometimes, it’s the quiet moments of understanding, support, and unwavering devotion that leave the deepest impression.

As I continue to replay scenes from the drama in my mind, I’m reminded that true love, much like “Touch Your Heart,” is often found in the simplest of moments – and that’s what makes it so enduring.
